‘An alternative history of the Internet’ is a pedagogical exercise that challenges us to craft an alternative internet from a WANA imaginary starting point. In the first part of the session, Brooklyn-based Aryana Hessami will dive into the history of the Internet from a bird’s eye view to give us a better understanding on how and where this all started. The second part will tap into our collective imagination of how we can build towards an alternative infrastructure moving away from the Euro-American dominance of the Internet’s infrastructures and design. What would it mean to replace Google with a WANA focused search engine? What new knowledge, languages, image cultures and political histories could we archive and craft? What would a speculative Internet made for and by us look like?
